The ocean is filled with many interesting creatures. Some of them are real and some of them are stuff of lore.  Many a tale of Neptune, Davy Jones Locker and mermaids are told over a pint of ale.

 A half fish, half human creature of the ocean is a mermaid.  She lures her inspecting victims with her beauty and drags them below the surface of the water.  Apparently she is a mixture of the earth and ocean. The mermaid represented the mystery of the sea to the Greeks.  What did become of those unfortunate sailors?

Of course, this is more Greek mythology than anything else is, but there are people who perform as mermaids.  These women with tails are still beautiful.

One of the main requirements is your love of water.  The swimming action is completely different as you are using a tail.  First off you work as a model to learn about how to present yourself. You wonÕt be out in the ocean swimming for the sake of swimming most of the time.  As you will be entertaining others a lot of the time, how you create a mystic presence, will be important.  Other important considerations are how a camera works and different shooting angles.


 Find out more about the ocean. Understand the seas by talking to the likes of divers who are always in the water.  See how their approach to the ocean works.  Make a portfolio by asking some underwater photographers to take some shots. YouÕre going to need that if you want to impress some prospective employers who may be considering you for their next mermaid.

 Learn how to perform by doing the likes of kidÕs parties.  The kids will allow you to practice the final details of being a mermaid without too much criticism.

 Have a go at creating a tail of your own.

Hannah Frasier is a professional model turned mermaid. She suggests that you create your own tail to match your body instead of copying other designs.  It should have a natural feel.  In addition, certain shapes create more power than others do, and they glide through the water better.  She says, be creative and make it you.
